Byzantine marriage silver medal in gold ring

Description
Antique ca 400 A.D. silver marriage medallion in later high carat gold setting. These engraved silver medals were often in bronze or iron rings and as the ring has perished the silver medals remain , and often were rescued and set in gold rings in the last 200 years.
Engraved marriage medals like this are illutrated in the catalog ue of Jeffrey Spier ” Byzantium and the West:Jewelery in the First Millenium.”
He writes : ” Rings engraved with the busts of married couples became very fashionable in the fifth and sixth century througout the Roman Empire. Typically the portraits are genericand not particulary realistic, although often a fashionable hairstyle or jewellery is often depicted to show the status of the couple.
