Description
An eighteenth century intaglio ring of Brutus. Mount and intaglio is ca 1770, probably Rome during the height of the Grand Tour era. The interest in ancient Roman history and Art spurned on Roman jewellers of the 1760 to produce very high quality “souvenirs” with historical interest. Brutus might have been a cold blooded killer who murdered his own step father, Julius Caesar but you could also view him as a desperate defender of democracy as opposed to tyranny. The intaglio carries the profile of Brutus with daggers on both sides.
