A good sized ancient Roman chrome chalcedony intaglio of perhaps Ceres / holding a pear and with a wheat sheaf / as a symbol of “plenty” and renewal in nature were important beliefs in the ancient world, so to wear an amulet invoked the positive forces and helped to protect.
All these carved gems served as protective amulets, besides being used as a personal seal in case you couldnt write.

The gem has a large chip on the underside but cannot be seen from the front.
