Silver gilt finger ring, probably English ca 1600. Two hands are clasping a crowned heart.
These rings are known as “fede” rings. Fede rings were used in ancient times in the Roman Empire, Fede is an Italian word meaning faith, trust and fidelity and comes from the Latin “mani in fede” mostly given as betrothal rings. Ancient Roman Fede rings are set with a carved banded agate cameo of two clasped hands. Fede rings had spread all over Europe by the Middle ages, and silver gilt and gold examples can be found in all major European museum collections
