Description

Oval carnelian intaglio of Socrates , probably modeled after the famous Greek marble bust of the Athenian philosopher now in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. Under the portrait is a branch representing the hemlock,that killed him, Socrates was ordered to drink after his famous trial in 399 B.C.
The intaglio is First Century A.D. and is in a late seventeenth century setting. Would have belonged to a wealthy scholar-collector in the late 1680 , probably having acquired the intaglio in Rome where ancient artifacts were often found at building sites. Size f the bezel 17 x 14 mm Ring size “R”
