cross ca 1000 A.D. One side is Christ and on the other side a Byzantine warrior Saint in full armor. Uniquely Byzantine that a crucifix would have a soldier on it who might be killing thousands…Byzantines thought of themselves as the new Israelites, where by divine design the new Jerusalem was Constantinople. Just like the Isralites and King David battled with the enemy, ancient traditions of Rome did not die but transformed into the new militaristic tradition of God’s soldier.
Byzantium was militarily threatened from all sides from its inception and military heroism was elevated into a saintly cult status. The Saint could be St Theodore of Tiron, or St Theodore Stratelates, St Demetrius , St Procopius , St Mercurius. Or St George.
/See St George who is nearly always depicted wearing full armor../
Most of these military heroes of the byzantine Empire had many Churches dedicated to them and their relics /like St Theodore’s shield was to hang in the church of Dalisandos./ were to give protection.
Measurement of cross : 88 x 40 mm
