Description
Ca fourth century A.D. cameo carved niccolo with the letters ICIOC. The only explanation of the cameo is that it is a variation of ICTYS that denotes Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter, (ICTYS) i.e. Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour, using the Greek word for fish “ichthys.As early as the first century, Christians made an acrostic from this word.
Cameo carving / cameo as opposed to intaglio carving where the image stands proud and the background is carved away- while intaglio carving is like seal carving whereupon the pressed image would be standing proud/ of words like this example is particular to the mid third century A.D. onward mainly in Byzantium.
Size of the cameo 15×12 mm High carat cast gold ring is modern ca 1880
Ring size “K” = US 5+1/2 Weight of ring is 23 gram
