Early eighteenth century silver mounted shell as a snuffbox. Probably English ca 1730.
The European Renaissance has ushered in a new interest in anything from the Natural World. European Royal Courts were vying with each other to form and to enrich their Collection of Curiosities. Strange animals from the New World, Rhinoceros tusks, coconuts, all forms of minerals, shells , whale teeth, narwhal tusks, meteorites, mammoth skeletons, etc.
In a small way this mounted snuff box was the later result of these appreciative times toward anything from the sea. To set this brittle and delicate shell into silver required dedication, skill and love for the “different”
As luck would have it, it survived to this day in remarkably good condition
