Ca 1918 Moscow cigarette case with an inset enameled picture of Lenin delivering one of speeches to his followers. The enamel is after a famous oil painting . Avant-Garde art exploded onto the art scene of Russia, sweeping out the old and staid of before, embracing the kubist, constructivist, abstract art movements of the era, and delivered a new Russian version of art for the revolution with exuberant energy and power. This freedom of expression was short lived and as soon as Stalin came to power he banned and persecuted all adherents of this art and most artist were either shot or ended their life in the Gulags./ Ironically the only surviving Modernist building left in Russia is the Mausoleum of Lenin/
A wonderful period of visual art.
