Partially gilt silver amulet, modeled on the Islamic form of small scroll cases. During the Crusades Europeans brought back the Islamic amulets and copied them back in Europe. This piece is most certainly a European example ca. 1400, probably Italian. The Islamic use of these small containers were to hold a small paper scroll with a verse from the Koran. When Europeans started to wear them they were used as amulets containing relics, thorns from the Holy Land, parts of the “true” cross, bits of stone from the tomb of Christ etc.
These amulets or relic cases, /reliquaries/ can be found with altered use up to the eighteenth century.
This “transitional ” type from Islamic shape but European decoration is very rare.
