Medieval pilgrims medal
Medieval pilgrims medal

Probably English ca 1300 gilt bronze pilgrim’s medal, depicting “Veronica’s veil”
These medieval “souvenirs” were bought after completing arduous and often hazardous pilgrimages taking months of walking. Great cathedrals like Canterbury, York, Gloucester, Westminster, etc would supplement their income by selling various “souvenirs” / probably blessed by the bishop/ as a protective amulet, so while having done the “right” pilgrimage and touched the relevant relic in the cathedral, you would be taking back something away with you as a protective force.
