ca 1600 probably Italian reliquary with rock crystal and silver. The relics are housed in nine small hollowed out dome of a large octagonal crystal. To give the background better visual the relics are sandwiched between a colored textile and the polished convex of a dome. Reliquaries were widely used and these types are amongst the top “models” of the time. Used as protection against all varieties of ills that might harm the wearer. To write about the relic trade of the middle ages would need a larger space than this and perhaps I will blog about this subject in the future as I find it fascinating.
