An ancient Roman carnelian intaglio depicting an elephant holding a palm leaf. The first century intaglio is set in high carat gold . The setting is ca. 1900 or later.
In ancient Rome an elephant could have symbolized wealth, or good fortune, or evoking the exotic east. Wearing an amulet with an image of an elephant could be a lucky charm but also a protecting image.
