18th century St. Jerome silver gilt reliquary.
Description
A fine first quarter 18th century silver gilt reliquary, engraved with the arms of pope Benedict XIII Orsini (1724-1730) and containing a 1th class relic (bone) of St. Jerome. The label says: S(ancti) Hieronymi Conf(essoris) / Ecclesiae Doctoris.
Note: St. Jerome lived between 347 – 420 AD, dying in Bethlehem. He translated the Bible into Latin. In 1298 he was proclaimed Church’s Doctor, as reported in the label of this reliquary.
