Small Spanish Colonial Silver casket


Small casket in silver / probably used as a table snuff box/ in the shape of a late seventeenth century wooden coffer or travelling chest / hence the side handles./ The chessboard decoration is imitating the wooden furniture as it was fashionable to inlay these wooden furniture pieces with painted red tortoise shell and mother of pearl. The casket is unmarked and from ca 1740 probably made in Guatemala , Peru , or Mexico.
